1. Can you tell us more about your design firm?
Our design firm, Between the Walls, operates at the intersection of architecture, interiors, and contemporary art. We strive to create not just spaces but holistic environments that inspire and connect people. We’re moving towards a multidisciplinary approach, exploring collaborations involving art spaces and unique objects, as we believe design is an ever-evolving dialogue.
2. What does “design” mean to you?
Design, for us, is a universe. It’s not just about aesthetics but about making a meaningful impact on people’s lives. In fact, our name—Between the Walls—reflects our philosophy: it’s everything that happens between walls that truly matters—relationships, experiences, and life itself. Design is also a journey; every project offers us the opportunity to learn something new, explore different contexts, and deepen our understanding of the world. Balancing technical challenges with the curiosity of discovery is what keeps us inspired.
3. Can you describe your design style and its main characteristics?
Each of our projects is unique, and we don’t adhere to a singular style. Instead, we embrace freedom and creativity, often blending seemingly contrasting elements to create unexpected combinations. Our focus on integrating works by contemporary artists into our projects reflects our mission to contribute to modern culture while creating deeply personal and meaningful spaces.
4. As the winner of the FoodInSpace Design Awards 2024, what does receiving this award mean to you, your company, and your team?
It’s a great honor to be recognized, especially within the context of the food and hospitality sector. While we work across various industries, this award feels particularly meaningful because it highlights our ability to make a mark in a specific community. Being acknowledged by professionals in this field affirms the value of our vision and efforts, and it inspires us to continue exploring new horizons.
5. What was the biggest challenge for your winning project?
The project itself didn’t present major design challenges; however, delays and funding issues on the client’s side were obstacles we had to navigate. It was also our first significant project abroad, which came with its own set of learning experiences. That said, we always approach challenges as opportunities for growth and development, no matter where we’re working.
6. In an increasingly global world, how do you balance local identity with international trends in your design work?
Ukrainians have always been open to innovation and new trends. While we adapt to the globalized world, we see our mission as promoting Ukrainian culture and craftsmanship on the international stage. We blend local identity with contemporary global influences, creating bridges between our heritage and the broader design community. This approach allows us to maintain authenticity while remaining forward-looking and innovative.
7. Are there any other topics you would like to talk about that were not addressed in these questions?
We’d love to highlight the growing visibility of Ukrainian designers on the global stage. We’re receiving more inquiries from international clients, which is a testament to the impact Ukrainian design is making worldwide. For us, it’s about building new connections and sharing our unique perspective, showing that Ukrainian culture has much to offer in shaping the global design narrative.
