1. Can you tell us more about your Design Firm?
Minnie Bhatt Design is one of Mumbai’s leading interior design firms, specializing in creating timeless and distinctive spaces. Our journey began with my first café project, Silver Beach Café, which set the foundation for what has now grown into a portfolio of over 500 projects. We specialize in crafting bespoke spaces that reflect the personality and aspirations of our clients while ensuring they are warm, welcoming, and practical. My team and I are deeply committed to storytelling through design, whether it’s a residential project or a commercial space like a restaurant or bar. Our work is characterized by meticulous attention to detail, a love for textures, and a strong narrative element that resonates with the intended audience.
2. What does “design” mean to you?
For me, design is a powerful form of storytelling. It’s about transforming a vision into a tangible reality that evokes emotion and enhances experiences. Design is not just about aesthetics—it’s about creating spaces that are functional, innovative, and enduring. It’s a way to connect with people and enrich their lives through thoughtfully crafted environments.
3. Can you describe your design style and its main characteristics?
My design style is contemporary yet rooted, blending global influences with local craftsmanship. I love to experiment with textures and layering materials like wood, metal, stone, and glass to create a balanced and harmonious aesthetic. At the core of my design philosophy is the desire to create timeless spaces with a distinct character. My projects often feature bold statement pieces, thoughtful lighting, and a mix of comfort and sophistication that engages the senses.
4. As the winner of the FoodInSpace Design Awards 2024, what does receiving this award mean to you, your company and your team?
Winning the FoodInSpace Design Award is an incredible honor for me and my team. It validates the creativity, hard work, and dedication we pour into our project. For us, this recognition is not just about celebrating the design—it’s about celebrating the collaborative effort with our clients and craftsmen who help bring these visions to life. This award inspires us to keep pushing boundaries and crafting spaces that leave a lasting impression.
5. What was the biggest challenge for your winning project/projects?
The biggest challenge with Eight Restaurant was creating a space that seamlessly caters to a premium audience while reflecting the restaurant’s contemporary Asian identity. We had to carefully balance functionality with aesthetics, ensuring the layout accommodated multiple sections, including an open entrance, a central bar, and a terrace, while maintaining cohesion. The bar design was particularly intricate, as it needed to be accessible from all sides and serve as a focal point. Overcoming these challenges required innovative thinking and close collaboration with the team.
6. In an increasingly global world, how do you balance local identity with international trends in your design work?
Balancing local identity with international trends is a key aspect of my work. I believe in weaving a narrative that respects the cultural and contextual relevance of space while incorporating global aesthetics to keep it contemporary. For instance, in Eight, elements like the hand-painted calligraphy and Asian-inspired seating reflect local identity, while the modern materials and textures bring a global touch. It’s about finding that perfect synergy where the space feels authentic yet universally appealing.
