THE 2024 FOODINSPACE AWARDS WINNERS INTERVIEW – Nan Arquitectos

Winner in the category Cafeteria with the project Misto Café Bar, Pontevedra – Spain

1. Can you tell us more about your Design Firm?

We are an architecture and interior design studio that focuses our team from a multidisciplinary approach.
We try to look for inputs in everything related to design and art, we do not limit ourselves to architecture and interior design.
We try to be always up to date with the state of the art, graphic design, fashion, film, music, …
And we approach each project as an artistic intervention within the functionality necessary to give viability to each proposal.

2. What does “design” mean to you?
Design is to give plastic or aesthetic solutions to problems that we face in our daily lives. The interesting thing about design from our point of view is that functionality is coherent with aesthetics or that aesthetics is derived from a functional component.

3. Can you describe your design style and its main characteristics?
We can define our style as adapted to each project, we believe that each project has to look for different solutions, so we are not anchored to a very marked style. Of course we have our own language and materials that we work with more frequently. There are also styles that we do not identify with or feel comfortable with.
It can be said that in our language we seek to define homogeneous spaces with the creation of volumes, clean, sober and without stridency. We do not like maximalism or overloaded spaces.

4. As the winner of the FoodInSpace Design Awards 2024, what does receiving this award mean to you, your company and your team?
It gives us great satisfaction. It is almost more important than the fees we receive for our work. It can be said that we work for vocation and because we like what we do.
To have our work recognized at the level of awards is undoubtedly the best thing that can happen to us, because it is also the way to get new projects.

5. What was the biggest challenge for your winning project/projects?
The biggest challenge for this and other projects is undoubtedly to have personality and to look for uniqueness within the tangle of projects that appear every day.
We always like to go to a place and be surprised by the way it surrounds us, and this is what we look for in our projects, that they surprise, that they have a strong personality and that they please.
We approach each project as an artistic intervention as we mentioned before.

6. In an increasingly global world, how do you balance local identity with international trends in your design work?
Obviously the inputs about what is being done in the world influence the creation of our own projects, but we consider that we integrate them within our own language and within the context in which the project is located.

7. Are there any other topics you would like to talk about that were not addressed in these questions?
Nothing more, just our thanks to your team for having taken this initiative that we consider very necessary and help to value the work of designers.

Thank you for the interview!
