MOJO JOJO, George Town – Malaysia

Project description

Nestled in the heart of George Town, Penang, this restaurant seamlessly integrates with a newly opened hotel, creating a fluid connection between hospitality and the lively retail shoplots that define the surrounding streetscape. Designed with a thoughtful spatial arrangement, the restaurant is divided into two wings—one providing hotel guests with a direct and exclusive dining experience, while the other opens up to the vibrant street, welcoming the public into a setting that is both inviting and intimate. This duality allows the space to cater to a diverse clientele, blending the energy of the city with a sense of refined comfort.
With its remarkably high ceiling, the design capitalizes on vertical space by incorporating a mezzanine floor above the kitchen, increasing seating capacity without compromising the openness and airiness of the interior. The material palette pays homage to local craftsmanship, featuring locally sourced plywood meticulously joined with solid Nyatoh timber. This combination creates a tactile warmth, reinforcing a sense of authenticity and craftsmanship that resonates throughout the space.
Lighting plays a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere—deliberately minimal and softly diffused, it enhances the restaurant’s moody yet welcoming ambiance. The dim illumination allows the natural tones and textures of the wood to take center stage, creating an environment that is both sophisticated and deeply immersive. Here, dining transcends the mere act of eating; it becomes an experience of slowing down, savoring, and connecting. Whether for hotel guests seeking a quiet retreat or passersby drawn in by its understated charm, this restaurant offers a serene yet dynamic escape within George Town’s evolving urban fabric.
