NAMA, Santiago de Querétaro – Mexico

Project description

The client was looking to create a space where diners could enjoy sophisticated Japanese food.
We implemented a process of research into Japanese culture, exploring everything from its streets and cities, to its customs and art forms. We collaborated with multiple teams of Mexican artisans and tradesmen to create the different spaces and elements that make up the restaurant.
We experimented with handmade, unique finishes with different textures, sheens and materials.
The most important and central element of the project was the Nigiri bar, made of completely organic stone from the region, where customers can experience firsthand the process of preparing Japanese food. Above this bar we included wicker lamps reminiscent of the emblematic Japanese fishing baskets.
In other spaces, such as the staircase to the bathrooms, we used woven palm panels, made by artisans from the state of Guerrero, sublimated with Suminagashi-style art, a Japanese technique that alludes to air, wind and water.
NAMA is an exploration of the traditional Japanese Wabi Sabi aesthetic, based on the beauty of the imperfect. We explore the relationship between dark and light, between rough and smooth surfaces, creating an imperfect balance.
