This project reimagines the dining experience at Khar Gymkhana, breaking away from the traditional perception of A Gymkhana restaurant design, The space transforms into a fine dining destination, aligning with contemporary expectations while maintaining its role as a vibrant social hub for members.
The design journey begins at the entrance lobby, a distinct area adorned with patterned stone veneers and a life-size Buddha poster that sets a serene and refined tone. Layered geometric partitions enhance the visual depth, marking a sophisticated transition into the dining space.
The centrepiece of the dining area—a “celebration tree”—anchors the design, fostering connection and conviviality. Surrounding this focal point are diverse seating arrangements that provide flexibility and comfort. The bar, positioned near kitchen, features a slatted design that cohesively matches the low-height slatted partition of the adjacent dining seating. This thoughtful design choice establishes a seamless visual language, ensuring that different elements of the space complement each other harmoniously. While primarily a serving bar, its aesthetic integration enriches the dining experience.
Freestanding screens incorporating acoustic panels and plants add to the functionality, offering pockets of privacy and calm while enhancing the acoustic quality of the space.
Two private dining areas further strengthens the project’s dedication to versatility, each offering tailored seating configurations to suit varied moods and occasions. Service efficiency, a key element in Mumbai’s fast-paced dining culture, is seamlessly integrated with well-placed service stations, ensuring smooth operations.
The redesign emphasizes both aesthetics and practicality. The existing marble flooring was meticulously re-polished to restore its grandeur, and terrazzo tile inlays were seamlessly integrated to repair damaged areas. Tiled table tops were chosen for their durability and ease of maintenance, ensuring functionality without compromising on elegance.
Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout the project. Old chairs were refurbished, and table bases were recycled, reflecting an environmentally conscious approach. These thoughtful interventions have resulted in a design that feels fresh and contemporary while being rooted in the ethos of reuse and renewal.
This project challenges the conventional gymkhana restaurant design, which are typically not designed spaces , by bringing it in line with today’s fine dining standards. It successfully creates a space that redefines expectations, offering a sophisticated and inviting atmosphere that resonates with today’s diners. This project is a testament to how innovative design can transform social spaces, setting a new benchmark for hospitality within the Gymkhana culture.
