Rock N´Wok, Zòcalo, Puebla – Mexico

Project description

Housed in a mid-century historic building in Puebla, this fast-food restaurant’s lighting design overcomes structural limitations to create a dynamic and immersive experience. With a ceiling height of only 2.20m and restrictions on overhead fixtures, the lighting strategy focused on vertical illumination, employing both upward and downward gradients to evoke the essence of fire—integral to the restaurant’s brand identity. Warm tones, ranging from 2200K to 2700K, transition dynamically to mirror the energy of the open kitchen, where flames from the woks define the culinary experience. Custom luminaires, designed and manufactured by Bandido Estudio, integrate dual-function lighting: direct downlighting for functional task illumination over tables and upward projection to enhance ambient brightness via reflective surfaces. In service areas, RGBW lighting shifts in programmed sequences, not only supporting branding efforts through color transitions during special events like Chinese New Year but also serving as a subtle visual cue for promotions. The outdoor terrace features a custom-built mirrored structure that allows for discreet ceiling-mounted fixtures while enhancing spatial perception. This reflective element visually connects the interior to the bustling street below, inviting pedestrians to engage with the activity inside. A centralized lighting control system automates operation, with time-based presets optimizing energy efficiency. Through a precise balance of intensity, color temperature, and directionality, the lighting design transforms constraints into opportunities, reinforcing the visual and experiential identity of the restaurant while maintaining the integrity of its historic setting.
