Rolling Roasters, Ekkamai, Bangkok – Thailand

Project description

Inspiration of “coal” has created Taahra Thai Charcoal Grill Bar today. As coal is a major component of grill, its smeared black colour presents a unique identity itself and was chosen to be a key colour of the whole design here. When monotone was applied inside the restaurant, it gives mysterious, interesting, and fascinating feelings at the same time. Inspiration of the first floor came from coal, and inspiration of the second floor came from charcoal.
Apart from concept design, food is as spectacular as the interior. Once customers step inside the restaurant, they will notice a grill bar. Under the shades of light projecting from above to the plates on the grill bar, all eyes will be led to the food and chef like a live cooking performance. Customers can witness how every single dish crafted, cooked, and absolutely grilled. Moreover, the designer has designed terrazzo countertop to make it looks like coal and flame which can be found at Taahra only. Together with the furnishing concept, the designer used scattered tiles for flooring and rearranged them in a new pattern to make it looks like a coal stockpile.
The second floor is inspired by charcoal, so they chose to apply some wood to enhance warm and cosy ambience. Moreover, this building is located in the residential area. Whenever the windows are opened, people will inevitably see tangled electrical wires. Not a good view though. If the designer chose to completely block the window, they will block natural light shining through those windows too. As a result, the designer has chosen to use frosted window glass that allows natural light to shine through, but moderates tangle from the outside.
One of the most important connection of this design is the staircase. There is a restriction of this building forbidding any demolishing of the staircase. Nonetheless, the old staircase was very steep and high. The designing team has overcome this obstacle by designing a new staircase to cover up the old one which makes it more functional and practical for customers and staffs.
Anytime you take a look back at the interior design, you can feel calm and genuine with the ambience crafted by coal stones and tiles. In addition, there is a hint of luxury from small details like dark bronze lamps.
Talking about the exterior. Despite the location in old town area and narrow alley, the designer has drawn a unique characteristic to the restaurant by placing a black log at the entrance to make it noticeable and memorable promptly. A black log is not just for decoration by it is the interpretation of firewood and grill. In terms of façade, it was all painted in solid black to make it outstanding and different from multicolour buildings from all around.
