The Orangery is a refined destination for lunch and afternoon tea within the grounds of Kensington Palace, purposefully designed to easily transition into a flexible event space. Historic Royal Palaces – the independent charity that cares for the public-facing State Apartments at Kensington Palace, has recently undertaken an extensive period of restoration at the Orangery.
The interior is brought to life through a scheme that adapts a warm, textured, sophisticated material palette, that compliments the 18th century building. The soft and balanced scheme exhibits a contemporary interpretation of the surrounding architectural details, with decorative arched screens that also provide acoustic benefits.
Key finishes have been chosen to elevate and reflect the original heritage of the building, such as the Verdure Tapestry wallpaper by Cole & Sons, that is inspired by a 17th century work currently being displayed within the Kings Presence Chamber of Kensington Palace, and printed fabric designs by GP & J Baker, inspired by the royal gardens of Historic Royal Palaces. Illustrations and use of colour bring a sense of joy to the elegant aesthetic.
Subtle design references that further link to the building’s history, include the bespoke floor lights by British company Heathfield, that take inspiration from Queen Anne’s pearl earrings – who originally commissioned the building, adding a sense of alluring ambience within the striking architectural setting.
