Wayan, New York – USA

Project description

Wayan is an all-day, full-service restaurant from Cedric Vongerichten, son of chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The Chef de Cuisine at Perry Street and his wife Ochi are serving food influenced by the cuisine of Indonesia, where Ochi is from, with a modern, French flair.Rockwell Group has conceived a downtown-slash-tropical feel for the narrow, linear restaurant, giving the existing white brick walls a milky wash, and adding wood floors, rustic teak paneling, amber glass, and accents of oxidized copper, batik screens, and authentic carved wood pieces from Indonesia. The restaurant’s entry façade features oxidized copper glazing, laser cut batik screen detailing, and an authentic Indonesian wood service door. Once inside, they are welcomed by a light and airy space with white-washed brick walls and a white-washed wood ceiling. A teak wood tile host stand features a vintage lamp. The bar die features a mix of marble slats in multiple tones, with amber glass millwork above and an antique mirror. A custom light fixture composed of clustered, hand-painted glass globes casts beautiful shadows at night and add warmth during the day. Custom banquettes positioned at the window add visual interest from the street. The transitional space between the front and back dining rooms features live-edge wood drink rails and shelves, rustic teak wall paneling with carved details, a raffia-patterned porcelain tile floor, and a white tiled bar die with a turquoise stone bar top and oxidized copper millwork. Here, guests have a view into the open kitchen. The moodier rear dining room has a wood ceiling and floor and here the whitewashed brick walls are accented with authentic carved wood pieces from Indonesia. Custom double-sided, daybed-style banquettes with low backs encourage a more social atmosphere.
